Operation SAFEE Flight Fly-in & Educational Expo happens at Opa-Locka Airport May 2nd & May 3rd, 2014

Miami, Florida – May 2nd & 3rd, 2014, 9am-3pm Operation SAFEE Flight and our partners are pleased to announce the third annual Educational Expo and Fly-In which will be held at the Orion Jet Center at the Opa-Locka Executive Airport. This event invites guests to become fully immersed in the aviation experience with hands-on flight learning simulators, discovery flights and interaction with leaders in the aviation and aerospace industry; community leaders, students, United States Coast Guard (USCG), aviation professionals and enthusiasts.

This year’s event features an intercollegiate flying “TAG” (touch and go) competition set for 9:00 am Saturday May 3rd at the Opa-Locka airport.  The competition will feature two contestant teams from Miami-Dade College, Broward College, Embry-Riddle, other universities and commercial flight schools.  Contestants will vie for a best flyer individual trophy and a best team trophy for the respective school.  In addition to the flying competition, the US Coast Guard is hosting their annual open house on May 2nd and will have a live search and rescue demonstration for spectators.  The USCG demonstration on May 3rd will occur following the “ TAG” flying competition.  In addition, there will be "Discovery" flights available for youth and the FAA will offer media tours of the control tower.

Contestants, dignitaries, and aviation experts will be available for interviews and commentary.  The FAA Regional Administrator Doug Murphy, USCG Commander, Captain Joe Kimball, esteemed officials and educators such as: Miami-Dade Aviation Director, Emilio Gonzalez;  the Honorable Mayors of Doral, Luigi Boria; Opa-Locka, Myra Taylor; Miami Gardens, Oliver G. Gilbert III; Miami Dade School Board member, Vice Chair, Lawrence Feldman, college presidents and principals from the region’s aviation and aerospace schools and universities as well as aviation company and trade organization representatives will be in attendance to support this aviation outreach event.
More than 4,000 South Florida students will participate on May 2nd in interactive aviation-related demonstrations, exhibits and learning activities.  Military and private aircraft will be on display.

This event offers participants the opportunity to become fully immersed in the aviation experience with hands-on flight learning simulators, discovery flights and interaction with leaders in the South Florida industry and community leaders.  The event is coordinated by the FAA, the United States Coast Guard (USCG), aviation professionals and enthusiasts.

Baker Aviation School is sponsoring next weeks Great Miami Aviation Association's (GMAA) monthly luncheon.  The speaker of the meeting is no stranger to the MMMC, Mr. Larry Harvey.  He will be providing a update to his last presentation on the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles / Unmanned Aerial Systems in South Florida.  If you missed his original presentation, you definitely will want to see this one!
